hopes14: Drawing on Difference
Sustainability is not a trend; it is the social movement of our time. To embrace this social movement we must fundamentally transform the way we think. Through design we draw on difference to strengthen the link between our individual creativity, our society, and the environment. As we synthesize these currently disparate ecologies, we locate an intersection of values that can inspire our attitudes and actions.

Hey Everyone
I have been wanting to do this for a while so, here goes…
It's been a few years now since I graduated from UO (I did actually get a diploma) and I have been working at Pyatok Architects ever since. There isn't a week that goes by where I don't think about the HOPES conference and what that experience has done for me in my professional life. I feel very strongly that working on the HOPES conference gave me a unique opportunity to put together something "real" and meaningful while still in school, while fostering my desire to be involved with sustainable design . Since leaving the world of education it is very clear to me that having had that experience has allowed me to excel here at Pyatok Architects and take more of a leadership role in the professional world.
Maybe you feel similarly to me when you think back on your time working on the HOPES conference.

Based around the theme "Permanence/Impermanence," the 12th Annual HOPES Conference will be held April, 13-16, 2006, at the University of Oregon. Plans are being made now for speakers and workshops. Updates to the schedule will be posted on the HOPES Website.
If you would like to make a suggestion for the conference, email the edc or post it on our forum.

Since its creation in 1995, the EDC's HOPES (Holistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability) conference has remained the only ecological design conference developed and managed by students. Held every year in April, HOPES works to promote the deeper understanding and broader application of sustainable design principles.
Over the past ten years, the conference has brought such luminaries as Sim Van der Ryn, Samuel Mockbee, James Hubbel, Angela Danadijieva, Michael Pyatok, Steve Badanes, Richard Register, David Orr, John Schaeffer and Clare Cooper Marcus to the University of Oregon campus.
HOPES features:
- nationally recognized keynote speakers
- expert panel discussions
- hands-on workshops
- green business expo
- 24-hour design charrette
- environmental art
- and more!
