Living a more natural, earth friendly life, in a healthier community will the focus of the 2nd Annual Good Earth Home, Garden & Living Show. This will be the first sustainable home, garden and living show of its kind in the United States. The innovative three-day event will be held January 26-28, 2007 at the Lane Events Center in Eugene, Oregon. ( )

The Ecological Design Center announced today that the third and final phase of its $100,000 project to bring solar energy to the University of Oregon campus is complete. The new Solar Kiosk will provide every student who visits the Student Recreation Center (SRC) with real-time information about exactly how much power the rooftop array is producing. The kiosk ribbon-cutting will be held at the SRC at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26. The event will last approximately 20 minutes. The Ecological Design Center announced today that internationally acclaimed architect Shigeru Ban will present the opening keynote for its 2006 HOPES Eco-Design Arts Conference in Eugene. Now in its 12th year, the 2006 HOPES Conference will be held from April 13-16 at the School of Architecture & Allied Arts on the University of Oregon campus. Shigeru Ban will speak on the afternoon of Thursday, April 13, 2006. World-renowned for his poetic architectural forms and structural innovation, Ban is perhaps most famous for his development of paper tube structures, disaster relief works, and refined Modernist aesthetic. Ban’s major works include the Japan Pavilion for the Hannover Expo 2000 in Germany; Paper Art Museum and Paper Church in Japan; Paper Tube Arch for MoMA in New York; DIY disaster relief housing in Rwanda and Kobe, Japan; and the recently completed Nomadic Museum, constructed almost entirely from mammoth paper columns and shipping containers. The winner gets a free T-shirt with their design on it, and $100 You: design a logo that embodies this year’s theme: The theme of this year’s conference is Permenance/Impermenance: "As a 21st-century culture, we alternately celebrate and decry ideals of permanence and impermanence. A lasting sense of place, permanent blight, disposable culture, ephemeral footprints: all relate to pressing questions about ecological design today, and they challenge us in our roles as the architects, designers, artists and citizens of tomorrow." The EDC is helping to sponsor the Rainwater Catchment Charrette for the Lawrence Hall Courtyard, a student project organized by Jonathan Dunn and Nic Smith. Click the image at left to see the flyer. The Charette has been run, a winner chosen and funding recieved through grants from EWEB (Partnership In Education), Lunar Logic and aided by donated materials from BRING Recycling.
